2007
International Day of Peace Observances.
The 21st of September was designated as the date for annual global observance
by UN Security Council Resolution 55/282 in 2001. These will be the
first UNA initiated Peace Day observances in the Lansing area. Peace
Day observance may become an annual community event.
Friday September 21, 11:30 am to 1 pm, Lansing City Hall Plaza
The observance has been organized in partnership with Greater Lansing
Peace Day Coalition. Faith congregations and the general public are
invited to attend. Local media will be invited to publicize the event.
Sunday September 23, 7 to 8:30 pm, East Lansing Hannah Community
Center
A panel of distinguished speakers and will discuss how ordinary citizens
can contribute to the promotion of world peace. Light refreshments will
be served. The general public is invited to attend. Local media will
be invited to publicize the event.
United Nations Anniversary Observances
October 24 is the 62nd Anniversary of the Founding of the United Nations.
Four unique events are planned during the anniversary week.
Thursday October 18, 12 to 1pm, Lansing City Council Chambers,
10th floor City Hall
The program will focus on the importance of international education
in the contemporary world and will feature the Model UN Club of Lansing
Eastern High School and officials of the Lansing School District. The
program will be recorded and broadcast on Lansing City TV.
Sunday October 21, 5:30 to 8 pm East Lansing Hannah Community Center
The annual UN Day International Education Awards Dinner & Program.
Plans are underway to also honor long time leaders and supporters of
the Greater Lansing UNA-USA Chapter and gift shop. The importance of
Millennium Development Goal 6 in the mission of the UN will also be
addressed.
Wednesday October 24, 12 to 1 pm, MSU International Center 3rd
floor conference room
Presentation by Carrie Hall, Global Compact Office, United Nations Development
Program (UNDP), UN Headquarters, New York. Topic: The Global Compact
Approach to International Development. Students, faculty and the general
public are invited to attend.
Thursday October 25, 8 am to 5 pm, Henry Executive Development
Center, MSU campus
International Trade Symposium II, cosponsored with MSU International
Business Center, Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce & Lansing
Enterprise Area Partnership (LEAP).
The luncheon and keynote address by Carrie Hall is cosponsored by the
Lansing Global Business Club. The UNDP/Global Compact approach to international
trade will be the subject of Carrie's address. The Symposium will be
widely publicized to economic development professionals, entrepreneurs,
academic institutions and government agencies. GLUNA members will receive
program and registration information and are invited to attend.
Finally, we urge everyone who can to attend the annual membership meeting
and election of officers and Board for calendar year 2008. The meeting
is scheduled September 23, from 6 to 6:45 pm in room 211, East Lansing
Hannah Community Center prior to the 7 pm Peace Day program noted above.
There will not be time for the usual potluck dinner prior to the annual
meeting.
