UN Anniversary Dinner & Program

October 26, 2014

Celebration of the 69th Anniversary of the United Nations at Hannah Community Center on October 26th was a resounding success! About 80 people enjoyed dinner catered by Tabooli’s Mediterranean and a beautiful performance of an ethnic Kazakh dance by Symbat Payayeva, an MSU student.

Keynote speaker George Papagiannis,  who handles external relations for UNESCO in the United States, delivered an interesting and engaging address, explaining to attendees a bit about the evolution of Millenium Development Goals into Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #4 concerns education. Mr. Papagiannis pointed out that education is not to be found somewhere, education is to be found everywhere, underscoring through examples how education is related to each of the other SDGs. He emphasized that UNESCO matters to Americans and Americans matter to UNESCOundefinedit is symbiotic relationship. UNESCO is at the forefront of peace activities, fighting terrorism through education and the teaching of tolerance.

The United States is not currently paying UNESCO dues because of a law enacted in the late 1980s and subsequently updated in the early 1990s. Mr. Papagiannis urged UNA members and friends to contact their representatives and senators in Congress to urge waiver of the law so that the US can pay its UNESCO dues which comprise about 22% of the organization’s budget. Americans for UNESCO is a web site with information and resources for those who are interested in learning more.
