In September, 2015, over 250 people celebrated International Day of Peace with a march, planting of a peace pole, and many other activities. GL-UNA and four other organizations co-hosted the event and 18 other organizations were sponsors, contributing either cash or in-kind donations to make the celebration fun and enjoyable for everyone.
We are building on that success this year! GL-UNA, Peace Education Center and other organizations are in the midst of planning PEACE QUEST 2016 a full WEEK of interesting, informative, engaging and enjoyable activities. The week will kick off on Sunday, September 18 with a variety of events, including a peace march for people of all ages, nationalities, and faiths to be held in Meridian Township’s Central Park. It will conclude with a Concert Across America being organized by Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence on September 25. A variety of other events, including lectures, films, music, an art contest, sporting events and a voter registration drive will be held throughout the week. Greater Lansing United Nations Association and Peace Education Center are working with houses of worship, schools and nonprofit organizations to organize these activities. Check the events page at http://www.gluna.org frequently for updates which will be posted as they become available.
How YOU can be involved in PEACE QUEST 2016:
UNA-USA Leadership Summit
GL-UNA Board members Lynn Bartley (President), Kristin Janka (President for Progams) and Nancy Lubeski (Vice President for Global Education) attended UNA-USA's annual Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. from June 12-14, 2016.The three brought back timely information about the focus of the UNA-USA for the next two years along with plenty of good ideas for involving our local chapter in the work. The group also learned about the process for selecting the next UN Secretary General and took part in advocacy meetings with Congress members along with MSU-UNA members who also attended the Summit. The main advocacy talking points, provided by UNA-USA, were 1) the US should fully pay our UN peacekeeping and regular budget dues; 2) US leadership needs to address the current refugee crisis - the worst since WWII; and 3) the US should work with the UN to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
